The Katrina Portraits - The Faces

To what do we owe these savage winds
That we've not yet given

To thee we've given our souls
Our livelihoods
Our families, our friends

To thee we've shed our tears
Mourned our shattered lives
Listened to the sounds of terror

To what do we owe these savage winds
We have nothing left

In the summer of 2015 I completed work on a large volume of work dedicated to the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The series is divided into three parts.

1) The Paintings
2) The Land
3) The Faces

The Paintings involve five pieces of sculpted wall art on canvas showing different aspects of the hurricanes wrath.

The Land involved photos I've taken of the New Orleans area over the past ten years where a hurricane has been added.

The Faces involved photos I've taken of New Orleans residents over the years where the faces have been removed and replaced with a swirling hurricane.

This was a very emotional volume of work. Having lived through Katrina and returned to New Orleans afterwards, each piece both photos and paintings were an emotional trip that this artist does not wish to repeat. It is my hope that these lend a personal face to the struggles that Katrina brought to the area and that each and every person in the region was effected in a deep and personal way.
