From the New Orleans Times Standard Newspaper
Southern Louisiana is known for its voodoo. The area is sunk deep in the mysticism of its ancient rituals. The tomb of Santa Muerte lies in no known cemetery. She was found deep in the wooded swamps of La Fourche Parish far from any settled area. This unmarked tomb is guarded by the Santa Muerte the personification of death. She is known as a healer, protector sees to the safe passage of her followers into the afterlife.
It is for sure that the one lying in this tomb was a worshiper of this deity and has her protection.
The tomb, made of solid granite is still pristine with the exception of the giant black granite doors which have been cast asunder as if grave robbers had tried to desecrate this place. But the crypt within lies untouched. Whoever tried to enter here went no further. There is only one other object nearby. A solitary rosary lying in a heap beneath one of the dead trees that rest nearby.
The exact location of this tomb lies hidden. The photographer who captured images of it has never been able to find it again, nor has any other living soul that we know of. It is a mystery as deep as the Saint that guards it.
The Tomb of Santa Muerte is the fifteenth sculpture in the New Orleans Tombs series. It is the brainchild of New Orleans artist Grey Cross and part of a larger artistic series called "Walking in the City of the Dead".
