Katachiwokaeru is a sculpture concept
that examines the role of natural shapes
within art. Instead of figuring out the
shape of a thing the artist wants to create,
the artist allows the components of the
sculpture to tell the artist what shape they
wish shift into. Katachiwokaeru literally
means "shape shifting" in Japanese.
The art form works best with natural
elements such as stones or wood.
The first sculpture created in this style
is called "Za ōrudo wan" or "The Old One".
It is composed of 5 pieces of wood
collected from 5 different trees. The artist
collected 25 pieces of wood and then let
the shapes of each piece tell him how
they wanted to be placed. Once the final
5 pieces were chosen, the artist melded
them into a single sculpture standing 36"
high. Its base is actually an ornate glass
frame collected at an estate sale.
This piece is $1,500 + S/H
