Black Lives Matter Archive - Artist Sasha Reid

BIO

This art piece done by me Sasha Reid was an art assignment given to me in my art class at my high school. The original prompt was to make a piece about the global pandemic. At the time when I made this I was mentally unstable from the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. My first sketch of the assignment was black fists in blood with the phrase "MONEY MATTERS" beside the fists. I turned in my sketch and my art teacher claimed that I couldn't do it because "the pandemic wasn't affecting them, It's  making it harder for people of color." As a black 15 year old girl in America with a brother and a father this made me mad. I felt as though I wasn't being heard and the issue at hand wasn't  big enough to be talked about. She told me to do something different and continued to talk about people of color. Later on in the evening I started to brainstorm ideas and look for inspiration on this project. I started becoming emotionally distracted by what she said to me. I pictured doing a piece on the pandemic and I was furious. I promised myself I was going to do something on the BLM movement instead of people of color or Covid-19 as she suggested. I knew that if I didn't do a piece about what's truly going on right now I would be mad and never forgive myself.

My art piece "STOP", is based around racism and my exposure to racism during the pandemic. This piece shows two separate magazine covers with false headlines and stereotypes commonly given to the black race and white cops. Under the headlines are words, names, and phrases that have been trending during the pandemic.

In my piece “STOP”, I wanted to use  Sharpie to make my characters look cartoonish almost as if it was not real. The outline of the characters is with Sharpie but painted with acrylic paint. The background of this painting is also painted with acrylic paint and the words are in Sharpie.

In stop, I am trying to spread awareness on this issue and hopefully make people emotionally affected by my art to get their attention.
