Black Lives Matter Archive - Artist/Writer Alexander Williams


"YOU CAN'T LOCK US DOWN"

This painting (acrylic on cardboard) was completed in June 2020 in direct response to the outpouring of public emotion following the murder of George Floyd.


BIO

Alexander Williams is a writer, singer, teacher and artist based in Watford. He also hosts the popular Dial Up Open Mic night events. Twice part of The Royal Court Young Writers’ groups, he was selected by Penguins Books in 2016 to attend their WriteNow event, aimed at increasing diversity in publishing, where he presented his LGBT themed Young Adult novel His Hidden Wings (published by TSL Books 2018). His children’s book Wendy The Whale was published by Wynstone’s Press in 2011. His poetry collection Black Iris (2015) reflected on his two years living in Jordan. Plays include: Ophelia (2009); Thyestes (2008, received a 3 star review from The Guardian’s Michael Billington); Dinner and a Doughnut (Scriptspace 2012); One Day On The Train (Scripted at Southwark Playhouse 2012); Stronger (Talawa Hotspots, 2012); Ten Dates (Bossanyi Studio 2014, Attico Arts CafĂ© 2016, London Improv Theatre 2017); Gust (Pen Fed Festival 2017) and The Lost Children, a Key Stage 2/3 musical for schools. He is also President of the Humanist Teachers Network.
