What is This Thing?

What does it mean when you are tagged as an immortalartist favorite?

We don't do this just to stroke your ego. We review hundreds of pieces of art each day. When we tag someone it isn't an empty compliment.

Its very difficult to judge a piece of art online. There are elements which we just can't see through a photo of the art. We see too many people hitting the like or favorite button without really ever considering the piece of art.

Basically we look at four things when we look at someones art:

  • Emotional Content
  • Color Use
  • Art Technique
  • Unique Aspects

Why bother with emotions? And why put it at the top of the list? For us, a piece of art that impacts the emotions is the most important aspect of any great piece of art. When anyone looks at art, they immediately judge it emotionally. This usually takes place on a subconscious level, but our emotions are still impacted.

Look at ten pieces of art online and make a note of which of those ten impacted your emotionally and which ones left you flat and emotionless?

Because emotions are such a subjective thing, its not always easy to know how someone will be impacted by any given piece of art. What leaves you flat may thrill another person to the depths of their spirit.

But we feel that there is a base level of emotions that impact us all when we see something for the first time. If your art impacts us emotionally the moment we see it we know there is something important within that art.

Next we look at how the artist uses color and blending. Even a black and white painting can have layers of color variations within it. The more varied the piece, the more we take notice.

Next we look at technique. This is a terribly difficult thing to judge just by a photo. We can often miss the more subtle aspects of the work. But some things do stand out and sometimes a simple explanation of technique within the body of your post can guide us towards better understanding.

Lastly, how unique is the piece? For example, if you've painted an image of Marilyn Monroe she will not be unique, that is unless you made her cherry tomatoes and mud, we are going to pass it up. The content is not unique. You didn't go out of your way to create something that others hadn't thought about.

In the end we take these four aspects and then we make a subjective determination whether it is great or merely mediocre. I say subjective because no matter who you are and how much you know about art, your still making a judgement call.

But in the end we want to make a big deal about peoples art. We want to share in the artists joy of the creation and we want to give you a simple yet important critique of your work.

So congratulations on being tagged an immortalartist.com favorite. Take a little pride in it and move on to create more great art.

"You dun good kid. Congrats".

  3. Wow thanks! I haven't been online long. But I feel deeply appreciative that you found beauty in my post. The fact that you take the time to look at it and repost it, makes the art come to life. For me, as an artist, that's all I want. I want the art to go out there. So, by this simple tag you gave me purpose as an artist. Thank you, , aukus
